Godsmack holds the record for Billboard`s longest running Top 10 single, "Whatever"—33 weeks. Godsmack borrowed $2500 from a friend to record their first CD. "Greed" was written in response to the same friend. "(`Greed`) is about this kid who was a tight friend of ours, who lent us the money to record our indie version of Godsmack and didn`t want any money back. But in return we paid him back, and then another 10 grand on top of that as a thanks! Then he tried to sue, saying he owned 10 percent of us. He put me through a year of hell negotiating with lawyers," explained Sully. Sully Erna is a practicing Witch of the Celtic Religion (WICCA) under Salem Witch Laurie Cabot. The Earth-respecting religion is integrated in many of Godsmack`s songs and Sully`s daily life. "It`s been my salvation. A lot of people are confused about witchcraft, it`s simply about worshipping the power of the earth, and that`s it! It`s a positive religion that has helped me through a lot of bad times." Godsmack recorded Awake in a "smelly-@$$ed dump warehouse in the middle of crack-ville Massachusetts." "There was a boxing gym downstairs, if we were hungry, we`d run out and get a crappy fast-food cheeseburger. We didn`t want to be surrounded in luxury, we wanted to keep the edge on," remembers Sully.
It`s unbelievable what`s happened in New England, ... We have the best fans there. Every place we`ve been playing has been selling out. It wasn`t that long ago that we`d been playing to 50 people in Boston, and we just headlined a 7,000-seat arena and sold it out.
That`s a blessing in disguise because they left a big void in their genre of music and that`s opened a little hole for us to fit in there,
We hung out for the day. Nothing was choreographed. It was really cool. We just got to light up the tires all day long. And as a band, the first half of the day, we got to hang around and watch these people go off on these killer machines and do the most insane stunts we`ve ever seen live.
A little bit of an influence is there, but we don`t sound like Alice in Chains, ... We`re influenced and don`t lie about it, but everyone is compared to someone.
Our music is very simple and doesn`t go over people`s heads, ... Simplicity has been the recipe for us so far.
I write what gets me off. If I listen to a song and jump around the living room with a broom in my hand, I know that that will trigger the same reaction in other people.
