I believe in a higher power. I`ve studied Eastern philosophies, and I`ve studied the Koran. We`ve devalued everything worth believing in. Now we`re tearing into religion. A line should be drawn. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and The Da Vinci Code (2006) borders on that. I was glued to the book, but afterwards I thought, `Oh my Lord, now we`re tearing into God and our faith.` Are we going to be turning into a reality show too? I certainly hope not.
- Patrick SwayzeIf The Da Vinci Code (2006) had been filming in a place where it rains a lot, I probably wouldn`t have done it. Quite low down in the list is "How much am I going to be paid?" I`d say I was quite cheap, but my main feeling about money is that I don`t want to feel as though I`m being taken advantage of. Certainly, I`m cheaper than Anthony Hopkins. The other actors they asked to play Gandalf wouldn`t go to New Zealand on that money for that length of time. I thought it would be a bit of an adventure. Tony Hopkins didn`t think it would be an adventure. Tony is part of Hollywood. I`m an eccentric English actor, and there`s a lot of us around.
- Ian McKellenWhat worries me is that people will take this as fact. I`m not angry, per se, that it refutes everything I hold sacred, the foundations of my beliefs. The Da Vinci Code (2006) is an admitted work of fiction but it cleverly weaves fact into maverick theories in a way that will appear plausible to some.
- Mel Gibson(On The Da Vinci Code) I`d love to make a movie that shakes the world and offends people, but I really. Didn`t think it was going to be this one. I think next to The Last Temptation of Christ it`s Tonka Toys. Nobody seemed to get offended by Martin Scorsese`s movie, no one seemed to get offended when Francis Coppola made a movie where he suggested that the mafia and the Vatican were in cahoots. Nobody picketed that. I play a monk who murders people, but it`s no more a comment on monks than it is on people who wear sandals. Or big long brown dresses.
- Paul BettanyHow could we possibly appreciate the Mona Lisa if Leonardo (Leonardo Da Vinci) had written at the bottom of the canvas, `The lady is smiling because she is hiding a secret from her lover`? This would shackle the viewer to reality, and I don`t want this to happen to 2001.
- Stanley KubrickComplete loose-stool-water. Arse-gravy of the very worst kind. (Speaking about Dan Brown`s novel, "The Da Vinci Code.")
- Stephen FryI found it interesting that as people become more technically oriented all over the world, at the same time people are becoming increasingly spiritual. The success of the Da Vinci code - even though it was a great yawn - also showed people`s interest in religion.
- Barbara WaltersLeonardo da Vinci, for example, was an expert on differentials and made thousands of drawings of gears in his lifetime, largely for military purposes.
- Alli Macko(Book publishing has never had the money or the customer base to justify Hollywood`s wall-of-hype approach, but the old publicity paradigm of coaxing reviews and interviews in the book pages is now supplemented, and sometimes supplanted, by all sorts of new marketing schemes. Random House Australia, the local distributor of The Da Vinci Code , is taking its publicity campaigns to shopping malls and street corners to lure readers into bookstores.) There are 200 new titles out there a month, ... We are always looking for new ideas.
