I looked down from my terrace hanging over the Thames one morning. It was low tide and there, stranded on the pebbles, was a four-legged corpse - hairless, white and bloated. Was it a calf or a sheep or a goat or a dog? I stared at it until the tide rose and washed it away. For 24 hours I was off my food. When I started eating again, I couldn`t face meat - fresh or tinned. Overnight I was vegetarian and I have been for 15 years or more. I`ve seen the pictures of factory farming and followed the politics of mad cow disease and felt effortlessly superior. Yet it`s not reason or conscience that keeps me off meat and fowl--and these days fish, too--just a memory of that unidentifiable, decomposing body on the beach.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which four things would you need to survive? "I`d take a good book - Dante`s Divine Comedy, because you can never plumb the depths of that. I would also take a mask and snorkel so I could check out the fish, because I love wildlife. And I`d take my laptop, so I could surf the `net to find a way to get off the damned island! I could write my novel then as well - and decide what the meaning of life is."

On who she`d like to be stranded on a desert island with: "I`d say Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. They come across as lovely - so warm, so bright and so talented. I imagine that we`d have great chats. And, if we ever ran out of things to say to each other, I could sing and write songs with Chris Martin, and play charades with Gwyneth. I reckon that they would both be good at strategies and tips for survival as well, which could obviously come in handy if we got stuck there for a long time".

Last year, when we were in Mobile, Al., covering Hurricane Ivan, we heard the stories of poor people, many of them black stranded downtown because they had no way out.

I was stranded in Disco. I went to dozens of darkened places with enough flashing lights to drive the average person mad. I felt lost in the pulse of sheer panic.

After meeting with Louisiana officials last week, Rev. I mean, reporters and crews are getting to stranded people, and government and military agencies can`t? Why don`t the networks run FEMA? When I saw pictures of black people taking things from stores, my first thought was: `How are those Nikes necessary for your survival?` And then it hit me: People need shoes and clothing. Some escaped the floods with just the clothing on their backs. We have American citizens, not `refugees` from an underdeveloped country, waiting for food, water, shelter, and electricity for four, five, six days.

Because of the difficult weather conditions and because of the volume of people Hartsfield serves, we are taking measures to help prevent stranded passengers.

Mr. President, thousands of people are stranded in New Orleans, still waiting for help. Some are wondering if America will help them or if they need to turn to Mexico. Many are saying that the government has let them down, that they`re being treated like animals, not human beings. What do you say to them?
