Originally, I didn`t like (John Ford)--because of his material: for example, the comic secondary characters, the brutality, the male-female relationships typified by the man`s slapping the woman on the backside. But eventually I came to understand that he had achieved an absolute uniformity of technical expertise. And his technique is the more admirable for being unobtrusive: His camera is invisible; his staging is perfect; he maintains a smoothness of surface in which no one scene is allowed to become more important than any other. Such mastery is possible only after one has made an enormous number of films. Questions of quality aside, John Ford is the Georges Simenon of directors.

At first it was very hard as I am a very even-tempered guy.. but I used my past life experiences to motivate me.. The one I used when I had to slap a woman around was easy! I was slapping the overbearing teacher who would fail you in their `holier-than-thou` class and enjoy it.

It wasn`t the first comic I ever actually READ, but the first comic I remember slapping down hard-earned money for was a `Superman Family` Annual in which the first story featured a married Lois and Superman waking up on a cloud. I remember being oddly aroused by the whole thing. I mean, the implication was that these two were fucking.

There are a lot of moving parts here. It`s not as simple as slapping together an extension of the current agreement.

We`ve learned from Ireland (where a similar smoking ban was implemented in March 2004) that the best way to begin these changes is to have a strong public presence. From next Sunday, we will be popping into bars and clubs and making sure that managers are coping. But we won`t be slapping fines on anyone without giving them an adequate warning, and we`re not really interested in following smokers home. We`re planning a very `softly softly` approach, because you can`t change a nation`s culture overnight. We just want to ensure the public know exactly what`s expected.
