Daddy had got us rooms in a motel until he could find us a house. There were not a lot of places available for a young family on our budget. Daddy went around to dozens of places. Nobody wanted kids. Finally, he found one in the hills south of Glendale. As usual, the landlady asked if he had kids. "Yep,` he replied. `A boy and a girl.` `Well, whatta you going to do about them?` she wanted to know, implying that she didn`t allow children. `I`m gonna take`em out and drown them in the Los Angeles River, and come back tomorrow.` That was my father - ask a silly question and just wait. She must have had the same sense of humor: we moved in the next day.

(on Montgomery Clift) Monty was a great talent, whose acting I always admired. He had extraordinary instincts. His observations about the script were always astute and correct. He would have made a great director, which eventually he wanted to be. "Would you ever direct yourself?," I once asked him. "Are you kidding," he replied. "As a director, I simply wouldn`t put up with all that crap from me." Monty was having problems then. He was full of all kinds of problems, many of them imaginary.

Someone might tell you to lose weight, but you can say no".

Paula is a sweet lady and a great addition to the family. I`m not really familiar with her music, and I`ve said this to her face. We had a party at the house for my sister, Renee, and (my) Dad said, `Charlie, put on some Paula Abdul, I don`t own any of her records`. So I replied, `I`ve been playing them so much, they`re all worn out, they scratch and skip all over the place it would be an embarrassment`. I was crushed when Bush got re-elected. I was so depressed and am still gravely disappointed with the results of both elections. I think history will verify that the world would have been a much better place if the outcome had not been that way. I`m never going to be invited for tea at the White House. But I`ve never gone on stage - before the elections or since - and slagged off Bush. Not because I agree with him in any way, out of respect for the office of President. It`s too obvious to bash Bush. Everybody knows what I think about his policies. We went to a local bar for a couple of drinks to cheer ourselves up. On the way home we passed a couple who were in their sixties. I could see the recognition in their eyes so I said, `How ya doing?`. The old guy replied, `I only got one thing to say to you` - and put his hand in the sign of a `W`. I went bananas - and that wasn`t one tenth of how badly my wife reacted. Needless to say, it`s been a difficult last couple of years. It`s heartbreaking many people now view Americans with suspicion. At one time, we were everybody`s best friend. We could go to places perceived as dangerous territories. Now, I`d think twice about asking our road crew to travel there. (May 2006)

I`m bloody well going to.` And that was it. I was so determined. It was something crucial to my life. I just so communicated with her, the story and their relationship. And when I found out, I just couldn`t believe it. I was so happy, I cried. I remember I was working part-time at a deli at the time because I didn`t have any money and was in the middle of making a sandwich when they phoned and said I`d got the job. I burst into tears and had to leave work because I couldn`t control myself. It was absolutely brilliant."

(on Tucker Carlson and his show): You may have heard that I went onto a TV show on CNN called "Crossfire" (1982), which I suppose is a debate show named after the stray bullets that strike and kill innocent bystanders during a gang fight. I said some pretty nasty things, most notably that their show was destroying America, and that he was a dick. He replied to me by saying, "You`re not being funny." At times it is hard to ignore the comparisons between Baghdad (where I was less than a month ago and have spent more of the last two years) and New Orleans: The anarchy, the looting, some of it purely for survival, some of it purely opportunistic. We watched a flatbed truck drive by, a man on the back with an M-16 looking up on the roofs for snipers, as is common in Iraq. Private security contractors were stationed outside the Royal St. Charles Hotel; when asked if things were getting pretty wild around the area, one of them replied, '˜Nope.
