Oscar-winning director John Schlesinger envisioned a cast of Al Pacino, Julie Christie and Laurence Olivier for "Marathon Man" (1976). Pacino has said that the only actress he had ever wanted to work with was Christie, who he claimed was "the most poetic of actresses." Producer Robert Evans, who disparaged the vertically challenged Pacino as "The Midget" when Francis Ford Coppola wanted him for The Godfather (1972) and had thought of firing him during the early shooting of the now-classic film, vetoed Pacino for the lead. Instead, Evans insisted on the casting of the even-shorter Dustin Hoffman! On her part, Christie -- who was notoriously finicky about accepting parts, even in prestigious, sure-fire material -- turned down the female lead, which was then taken by Marthe Keller (who, ironically, became Pacino`s lover after co-starring with him in Bobby Deerfield (1977)). Of his dream cast, Schlesinger only got Olivier, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
- Dustin HoffmanWhat I hate about our business today is the elitism. So-called stars ride in private jets and have bodyguards and dietitians and beauticians. Tom Cruise is a midget and he has eight bodyguards all 6 feet 10, which makes him even more diminutive. It`s an absolute joke.
- Richard HarrisNicholson (Jack Nicholson)? As far as I`m concerned, he`s a balding midget. He stands five-foot-seven, you know. He tries to play heavies and doesn`t quite make it.
- Oliver ReedIf you want a midget to look like a baby, don`t put a cigar in his mouth.
- Chuck JonesSome of the (midget) men used to tease me while we were making The Wizard of Oz, used to sneak under my dress! I told them if they ever went under there - and I found out about it - they were in big trouble!
- Judy GarlandGermany is an economic giant but a political midget, and with the end of the Cold War she has started to muscle her presence throughout Europe and the world.
- ChristoWhat can I do, I asked myself, that is so spectacular that no one will be able to say he had seen it before? The answer was perfectly obvious. I would send a midget up to bat.
- Al TellecheaNinety-five per cent of my language problems are the fault of that stupid little midget.
