James Ivory is very, very subtle in his study of human behavior. I think that he`s very aware of the subtleties of women behavior.
- Leslie CaronJames Ivory comes close to the actors for the first rehearsal. He more or less lets you direct yourself and then will only correct you if he finds it incorrect.
- Leslie CaronA Merchant Ivory film, It`s quite hard to finance this kind of film, so there`s a sort of pressure to move through the day and get it done.
- Ralph Fiennes(From 1994 interview when asked the reasons for the success of A Room with a View (1985)) "I`ve never seen it, so I don`t know. Florence was lovely of course, and it`s a wonderful love story. I did enjoy doing the part, because Maggie Smith and I were old friends from 1958. We both arrived in Florence on the same day and neither of us had any family with us, so we would spend all day together filming and then go out to dinner together, catching up on our Old Vic days. But, I didn`t enjoy working with James Ivory. I didn`t feel that I was on his wavelength and I didn`t feel that he wanted me in the film, I have to say that. I remember doing that scene in the middle of the square where she goes mad and attacks the man selling postcards; James went to see the rushes and told me afterwards that everyone had laughed at it, they`d thought it was very funny. `Well done`, he said to me. I thought perhaps we`d turned the corner but, when I came to post-sync the film, that scene was missing. When I asked why, he told me that Helena Bonham Carter hadn`t been feeling up to it that day, so he`d cut the whole sequence. I don`t know if that was the real reason he cut it - I just don`t know".
- Judi DenchI don`t want to live in an ivory tower, being the songwriter who just turns inward.
- Billie Joe ArmstrongI was a little concerned that a lot of people thought I wrote Merchant Ivory movies. I also thought if I was ever going to write something strange and difficult, that was the time.
- Kazuo IshiguroWhen they come downstairs from their Ivory Towers, Idealists are very apt to walk straight into the gutter.
- Adam KatzOur dreams are a second life. I have never been able to penetrate without a shudder those ivory or horned gates which separate us from the invisible world.
- Alex RatelleThere is nothing but water in the holy pools. I know, I have been swimming there. All the gods sculpted of wood or ivory can't say a word. I know, I have been crying out to them. The Sacred Books of the East are nothing but words. I looked through their covers one day sideways. What Kabir talks of is only what he has lived through. If you have not lived through something, it is not true.
- Anice SextonThe bird captured on video is clearly an ivory-billed woodpecker. Amazingly, America may have another chance to protect the future of this spectacular bird and the awesome forests in which it lives,
- Art MorganWe`re excited and encouraged by the acoustic analysis. These sounds give us additional hope that a few ivory-billed woodpeckers do live in the White River and Cache River region.
- Art MorganOccasionally a hunter will come up with a really good sighting, and they`re all in the places you`d expect (to find ivory-billed woodpeckers), ... They`re so few in number they can be off the radar screen.
- Barbara SchneemanThe Grail Bird: Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker.
- Barbara SchneemanDreams surely are difficult, confusing, and not everything in them is brought to pass for mankind. For fleeting dreams have two gates: one is fashioned of horn and one of ivory. Those which pass through the one of sawn ivory are deceptive, bringing tidings which come to nought, but those which issue from the one of polished horn bring true results when a mortal sees them.
- HomerCan anyone picture God telling, taking, or enjoying a good joke? The idea is laughable. The Devil, on the other hand, laughs with demonic mirth, is possessed of a sardonic wit, and his eyes hold a glint of wicked bemusement. The farthest God, in his popular image, ever strays from sobriety is a beneficent smile. Satan sniggers with fiendish scorn at God, who sits in his ivory tower emitting nary a chuckle.
