Oscar-winning director John Schlesinger envisioned a cast of Al Pacino, Julie Christie and Laurence Olivier for "Marathon Man" (1976). Pacino has said that the only actress he had ever wanted to work with was Christie, who he claimed was "the most poetic of actresses." Producer Robert Evans, who disparaged the vertically challenged Pacino as "The Midget" when Francis Ford Coppola wanted him for The Godfather (1972) and had thought of firing him during the early shooting of the now-classic film, vetoed Pacino for the lead. Instead, Evans insisted on the casting of the even-shorter Dustin Hoffman! On her part, Christie -- who was notoriously finicky about accepting parts, even in prestigious, sure-fire material -- turned down the female lead, which was then taken by Marthe Keller (who, ironically, became Pacino`s lover after co-starring with him in Bobby Deerfield (1977)). Of his dream cast, Schlesinger only got Olivier, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
- Dustin Hoffman"People are simply screwing up when they go out and buy beefsteak, which is killing them with cancer and heart troubles. The stuff costs a fortune too. You could feed a thousand people with lentil soup for the cost of half a dozen filets." (Ironically, Harrison continued to smoke cigarettes until the 1990s.)
- George HarrisonI lived in Hollywood and, ironically, I didn`t know you could just go out and get an agent and go on auditions and try and become an actor, I thought it was like a Masonic thing, like a blood line you had to belong to - until I was 13. Then I realised what you had to do. It is the one thing I know I want to do for the rest of my life.
- Leonardo DiCaprioWell ironically my last three roles have all been a mother. One was a Canadian film where the baby was taken away because she is a drug addict, in Irish Jam I play a mother to a four year old. I think in the future I`ll be able to handle the role with a lot more depth.
- Anna FrielIt`s related to acting really. I wish I had his career. I remember being in "Remington Steele" (1982) and seeing Bruce Willis go out there and just do it. I thought, "He`s making movies and I`m still here". I just remember that. I remember, ironically, in 1986, I remember going into the old La Scala in Malibu. Bruce was there with Demi (Demi Moore), I had just been offered the Bond in `86 and he said to me, "Well done, man, you got out, way to go." I said, "Thanks, Bruce". Of course, two months later I was high and dry without any Bond in my life or even "Remington Steele". The next thing I see him and he`s off doing his feature films. I always wanted to do movies. I`ve stopped trying to pick myself. Hopefully, you reach a point in life where you leave yourself alone and make peace with your shortcomings, whatever they may be. Education is something for me. I left school at fifteen, sixteen, so I`m always feeling like I got to catch up, got to catch up, got to catch up. That`s something that, you know, you find yourself in a meeting and you`re like, oh boy, we`re going into deep waters. I haven`t read that piece of literature, that`s a piece of information I should have known.
- Pierce BrosnanPresident Jimmy Carter was a citizen soldier. Ironically, he was considered weak because he didn`t kill anybody and he didn`t get anyone killed.
- Andrew YoungHowever, ironically, I was baptized Presbyterian, and went to a Quaker school for twelve years.
- Brian De PalmaPresident Jimmy Carter was a citizen soldier. Ironically, he was considered weak because he didn`t kill anybody and he didn`t get anyone killed.
- Jayne MansfieldIronically, for a few million people in the Far East, I did become an English teacher through my music.
- Pat BooneHollywood filmmaking has become more and more about power and control. It`s really not about telling stories. That`s just a pretense. But ironically, the fundamental difference between making films in Europe versus America is in how the screenplay is dealt with. From my experiences in Germany and France, the script is something that is constantly scrutinized by the film made from it. Americans are far more practical. For them, the screenplay is a blueprint and it must be adhered to rigidly in fear of the whole house falling down. In a sense, all of the creative energy goes into the screenplay so one could say that the film already exists before the film even begins shooting. You lose spontaneity. But in Germany and France, I think that filmmaking is regarded as an adventure in itself.
- Wim WendersAt one point, I actually, ironically, thought I might go into criminology and work with the FBI.
- Monica LewinskyIronically, it is exactly because we are a city that embraces freedom, that welcomes everyone and encourages their dreams, that New York remains on the front lines in the war on terror.
- Michael BloombergIronically, we live in times that are awash in authentic sacred music.
- Richard MorrisThe sad part about our past is that religions, ironically enough, are responsible for creating the most destructive idea that has ever been visited upon the human race: the idea that there is such a thing as `better.`
- Neale Donald WalschAs they say, one thing led to another, and, ultimately, the British and Irish governments asked me to serve as chairman of the peace negotiations, which ironically began six years ago this week.
- Alex MaghoubIronically, the Canadian naval vessels, aircraft and personnel in the Persian Gulf I mentioned earlier who are fighting terrorism will provide more support indirectly to this war in Iraq than most of the 46 countries that are fully supporting our efforts there.
- Amy BaylorIronically it seems in this case Mr Brogden`s own party were behind pushing this fairly keenly, including the so-called Christian Right in the Liberals in New South Wales, who seem to have taken over,
