Nerds don`t just happen to dress informally. They do it too consistently. Consciously or not, they dress informally as a prophylactic measure against stupidity.

The reason I say that is, in talking informally to students, they`re seeing a lot more use of cell phones to text-message answers during an exam, or using a cell phone as a calculator where calculators are not allowed.
