In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. There is no safe store of value.
- Alan Greenspan(Sen. Richard Cohen (DFL-St. Paul), who authored legislation calling for inflation to again be considered in state budget projects, was less tactful.) We knew that if you don`t budget for inflation it will catch up with you, ... Three dollars a gallon for gas was not predictable, but rising costs were certainly predictable. We had an ostrich-buries-his-head-in-the-sand approach to the budget because we were trying to get through the session without admitting we had to raise taxes.
- Richard CohenThere is a multiplicity of reasons why the ECB has eased again and by so much, ... Critically the euro zone fundamentals have been crying out for lower rates for quite some time, with growth momentum slowing in the EMU area, Germany close to a double dip recession and inflation set to slow dramatically next year.
- David BrownGrowth would be higher, inflation would be lower (and) employment would be higher, if we didn`t have these energy prices. But it hasn`t been a deal-breaker.
- John Mitchellunwelcome substantial fall in inflation....
- John SnowConcerns over (higher energy prices) feeding into higher wages have so far not materialized, which has dampened the risk of a rise in inflation expectations.
- Michael PennWhen runaway inflation and bank failures struck in Germany in the 1920s, the middle class was destroyed, which led directly to the rise of the Nazis.
- Nick ClooneyMedian wages of production workers, who comprise 80 percent of the workforce, haven`t risen in 30 years, adjusted for inflation.
- Robert ReichBond fund managers don`t believe long-term inflation is a significant worry.
- John NorrisThis is a good settlement with overall percentage increases slightly lower than last year but still in line with inflation.
- Nick JonesFor the bond market, it`s clearly not bullish, ... At a time where growth is strong, the labor market is still tight, and price pressures are building, the last thing you need is a surge in energy prices that will push inflation up across the board.
- Mike RyanLabour has overseen an extended period of high growth, relatively low inflation, low unemployment-high job creation - and yet it has a fight on its hands.
- Richard ShawWe have rising energy and a handful of other commodity prices moving up. So the risk is we get more inflation. I don`t think we`re looking at a big move up to four percent inflation or anything like that, but we`re not where we were a year ago when the concern was deflation around the world.
- Kathy JonesIf we have wealth, it will be protected from inflation and possibly even enhanced in value.
- William GreiderGovernment spending in the year to September increased by a thousand percent. When you spend a thousand percent, you will likely get the same amount in inflation. The real economy in this country shrunk even by the government`s own admission by 45 percent in the last five years. That means, government should have shrunk by 45 percent. Government has not shrunk by 45 percent. The formal economy is producing much less tax revenue, in order for it to pay its civil servants. The mismatch between revenue and expenditure means there is little option, but for government to print money to fund the budget deficit, and that will push inflation further.
- John RichardsThe economic indicators continue to feed the bull market that we`ve been enjoying for the last couple of years. Inflation is reasonably mild and under control, the consumer is in great shape and continues to spend -- we don`t think everything is going to be in a straight-up fashion, but the underlying fundamentals that are positive for equity markets are still very much intact in the U.S.
- Larry JonesIf prices -- adjusted for inflation -- were to go above those of the 1970s oil crisis, then China would face a trade off. It either lets its refiners go bankrupt or it sacrifices its inflation target,
- Alan ChanThe entire movement in yield has been accounted for by a change in inflation expectations.
- David GoldmanWe have some concerns if student financial aid is not keeping pace, and college costs continue to outstrip inflation.
- Mary JohnsonThey must have confidence that a temporary shift in inflation -- the result, for example, of a jump in oil prices -- will not be allowed to pass through into higher inflation over the longer term.
- Richard LambertI don`t see much risk of inflation, partly because the Fed will do whatever it needs to do to keep it low.
- Sharon LeeIt certainly did help to see some narrowing of the trade deficit -- but the real positive for sterling will be a `steady as she goes` message from the Fed and then the next step will be to see what the inflation report tomorrow has to offer.
- David MannHigh oil prices may raise inflation but longer-term it`s negative for growth and that`s how the Fed sees it.
- David MannWe don`t have a major problem right now in our country, and life is normal. Things like unemployment, which the youth are suffering from, and the rate of inflation - these are chronic conditions and we have to solve them.
- Ahmed MukhlefWe are a people trying not only to solve the problems of the present: unemployment, inflation... but we are attempting on a larger scale to fulfill the promise of America.
- Al HutchinsonAgency by agency, we frequently have lost a bit of ground, at least to inflation-but had it not been for the efforts we`ve made to educate people about the importance of science, technology and advanced education, those predictions very well might have come true.
- Alan GummersonI would say to my colleague that the misery index, inflation and unemployment, when added together is the lowest it has been in the last series of Presidents, even going back to Jimmy Carter. So I think the Bush administration is doing a good job.
- Alan LloydThe reality is that zero defects in products plus zero pollution plus zero risk on the job is equivalent to maximum growth of government plus zero economic growth plus runaway inflation.
- Alan WaltersRight now the long-term investors are telling us that they`re not as concerned about inflation and so we`re seeing these rates now move into the marketplace and out to the street - rates that individuals can get.
- Alex CruzThey flooded liquidity in the marketplace but the mortgage rate is based much more on expectations of inflation. So if the average investor believes that there is inflation coming, they`ll move that rate up.
- Alex CruzOur system of private health insurance that fails to provide coverage to so many of our citizens also contributes to the double-digit health care inflation that is making America less competitive in the global economy.
- Alireza JafarzadehIt has now been over 7 years since Congress last raised the minimum wage to its current level of $5.15 per hour. Since that last increase, Congress`s failure to adjust the wage for inflation has reduced the purchasing power of the minimum wage to record low levels.
- Allan MayerWith sound monetary policy, the increases in import prices are offset by lower inflation for domestically produced goods and services.
- Amanda BirdIn short, both experience and economic theory imply that the US could now t to a more competitive dollar without experiencing either increased inflation or decreased economic growth.
- Amanda BirdWhy has this improvement in inflation and in the business cycle occurred? I think the answer is better monetary policy, better central banking.
- Amanda BirdThirty years ago, many economists argued that inflation was a kind of minor inconvenience and that the cost of reducing inflation was too high a price to pay. No one would make those arguments today.
- Amanda BirdDomestic inflation reflects domestic monetary policy.
- Amanda BirdInflation is lower and more stable and the real business cycle fluctuations are more modest.
- Amanda BirdWe pay some price when necessary to bring down inflation but that price is temporary and is not large relative to the permanent gain from reduced inflation.
- Amanda BirdWhen people begin anticipating inflation, it doesn`t do you any good anymore, because any benefit of inflation comes from the fact that you do better than you thought you were going to do.
- Amy AmmonsDouble-digit inflation is a terrible thing - and it got up to 14 or 15 percent on a monthly basis for a while, shortly after I became chairman of the Fed.
- Amy AmmonsBy the time I became chairman and there was more of a feeling of urgency, there was a willingness to accept more forceful measures to try to deal with the inflation.
- Amy AmmonsIt was the biggest inflation and the most sustained inflation that the United States had ever had.
- Amy AmmonsYou could not buy a house in those days without just assuming that the house was not only a place to live, but it was a good investment, because it was going to keep up with inflation or get ahead of inflation, and it was just - that was America.
- Amy AmmonsDemocrats balanced the budget for the first time in a generation, had record surpluses, low unemployment, low interest rates, low inflation.
- Andi WiseHowever, this President sees no problem eliminating funding for Perkins Loans in his budget, even though the cost of tuition is rising and will continue to rise as the administration`s policies force inflation.
- Andrew FaganInflation outstripped real wages for people who work for pay from others.
- Andrew FaganForeign trade clearly has been a reason why inflation has been low.
- Andrew FaganThe downward rigidity of nominal wages is often pointed out as a factor that prevents the smooth adjustment of real wages under very low inflation.
- Andrew GrovesA low rate of inflation itself now poses a new challenge of achieving and promoting sustained economic growth in the global economy.
