(on turning down the role of Gandolf in the first "Lord of the Rings" film) I had never read (J.R.R. Tolkien), and I didn`t understand the script when they sent it to me. Bobbits? Hobbits?
- Sean ConneryI was told I had to gain a lot of weight because Hobbits are very portly. Peter (Peter Jackson) is forever suggesting I have more food: "A little more food for Mr. Astin."
- Sean Astin(re jokes about "where the Two Towers were really located," that is, rumors about gay affection among the hobbits:) "I think it`s because we`re all young, good-looking guys. We`re kind of cheeky, and we`re very physically tactile with one other. I love those guys. I don`t (have) any qualms about it. They`re my brothers, and I don`t have any problem showing affection for men. I`m aware of my own sexuality enough to be free with people." (quoted in MX (Melbourne, Australia), December 16, 2003)
- Dominic MonaghanThe Hobbits are just rustic English people, made small in size because it reflects the generally small reach of their imagination.
- J.R.R. TolkienHobbits are a lot like Scots. It`s all about nature and enjoying their land, which is a very Scottish thing.
- Billy Boyd(teasing a journalist who asked about the hobbits` popularity in the gay community:) "We had to learn how to canoe. I don`t know why, because we don`t do it in the movie, but it was part of our training. And there was a group shower. All the Americans, though, they were quite scared. Elijah and Sean just, like, didn`t have a shower and left, but me, Orlando and Dominic, in our British way, all got involved in showers. But it was just a shower." (December 18, 2003)
