Surprisingly, Utah is the second highest in the nation in the number of eighth-graders taking algebra, but we are still low in achievement. Our state math core only goes through linear equations.
- David WrightEvery day after lunch we walk, ... Every child has a stop watch and a pedometer and every child has a spread sheet. They record their steps and their time every week and third-, fourth- and fifth-graders find the mean or the average of their steps and time.
- Donna King(N orfolk, VA.--It`s hard to tell exactly when the Norfolk Public Schools hit rock bottom, but 1998 was particularly dismal across the board: Just 38 percent of third graders passed the state`s Standards of Learning, or SOL, test in English; 26 percent of eighth graders were proficient in mathematics; and a mere 18 percent of high schoolers passed Virginia and U.S. history. For John Simpson, who took over as superintendent that same year with a mandate to boost achievement for all of the district`s 37,000 students, the only solution was to completely shake things up.) When I arrived, people were unhappy, but many of them had the attitude that given a fairly poor and high-minority population, that might be all that they could do, ... There was no room for excuses anymore.
- John SimpsonThe toughest part for us is being so far ahead of where they are, we have to stop, ... We forget that even though we`re dealing with 9th-through-12th graders, they`ve never played so we have to evaluate ourselves as a staff. Take tackling. Some of them are learning and you talk to them, try to teach them and they have that far away look in their eyes and you have to go over it again.
- Tim Sanders(And Allan said he was pleased to see seventh-graders Fee and Tyrrell withstand the pressure of a big meet.) Rebecca and Megan ran together, ... That was the plan of the race.
- Sean AllanI feel sometimes that in children`s books there are more and more grim problems, but I don`t know that I want to burden third- and fourth-graders with them.
- Beverly ClearyI enjoy writing for third and fourth graders most of all.
- Beverly ClearyAs long as my sixth graders showed an average improvement of five years, the principal and district pretty much left me alone to create my own curriculum and teach whatever I wanted.
- Dan SimmonsWe are young, ... We start a lot of juniors, sophomores and ninth graders. We have 10 seniors on the team.
- Andy HubbardThis is mainly going to alleviate overcrowding at Double Churches. We`re going to let fifth-graders who get assigned from those two schools to North Columbus remain at their schools, if their parents want them to continue there and they apply for a hardship. Students in the other grades can apply for a hardship, but we will look at space available.
- Angie LassmanOnce my mom became a teacher, I saw the importance of education. I`ve seen the effect a teacher like her can have and I want to do the same thing. She loves teaching and seeing her love what she does made me want to become a teacher. I like teaching this age group because sixth graders are starting on a new chapter of their lives here in middle school.
- Arna SelimicHe`s been there and done it (NRL first grade with Souths). He`s had a great year for us. He came back to help out. Even the experienced first graders like Brad McManus, who has five or six seasons in first grade, look up to Pete. We`ve got a great pack with Wes Coe, Brock plus Mark Macauley and Aaron Mitchell.
- Ashley NoblesData analysis serves as a process that underpins scientific inquiry. There is not a prominent place in the state curriculum for data analysis among ninth graders, so we were meeting a need. Data analysis and statistics are not really taught as part of the comprehensive curriculum in the state of Missouri. We wanted to give the kids a chance to work with statistics. Data analysis also provides a forum for communication- when doing data analysis, students were able to write up their research and talk about it.
