Gardening Quotes

My father was an avid gardener. On many a summer morning he rousted me out of bed well before sunup and handed me a hoe. We had more than an acre to tend, and the objective was to get as much as possible done before the sun got too high in the sky and the temperature rose above 100. The humidity in that region, while good for the skin and for growing vegetables, is oppressive, and heat exhaustion is always a possibility in summer. On several occasions my thoughts turned patricidal. But as the years have passed, I have grown to appreciate what my dad taught me, not only about growing things in the earth, but also about responsibility and the value of hard, physical work. I now derive physical and spiritual pleasure from gardening. All this galls me a little, because my dad always said it would turn out this way.

Husband] Roy died on a Saturday, while we were gardening. The Thursday before, I was up for the part of the mother in a series Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher were working on. Then Roy died, and nothing came of that series. But two months later, when they started on Leave It To Beaver, they remembered me and asked me to read for the part of June. I put quite a few trees in last autumn. A lot of silver birch and a couple of native trees - just generally doing gardening, putting plants in and hedges in. It takes quite a lot of time and I love it.

My hobbies are cooking and gardening, especially growing orchids. I love soccer, my husband and I support a British team called Chelsea, and I also enjoy tennis. We have 3 cats.

I don`t hold that everybody has to love fashion. Some people like gardening.

Each person has his own safe place-running, painting, swimming, fishing, weaving, gardening. The activity itself is less important than the act of drawing on your own resources.

I also enjoy writing my regular column for Organic Gardening magazine, so I may do more of that sort of thing in the future, if anybody wants it!

I have to keep up with the scientific literature as part of my job, but increasingly I found myself reading things that weren`t really relevant to my academic work, but were relevant to gardening.

For most of that time, I`ve also been a keen gardener, but for many years I failed to make the connection between gardening and science.

Gardening is about enjoying the smell of things growing in the soil, getting dirty without feeling guilty, and generally taking the time to soak up a little peace and serenity.

Gardening, I told myself, is the most sociable of hobbies. The very nature of one`s field of activities demands an audience. No one wants flowers to blush unseen or waste their sweetness.

Gardening is a kind of disease. It infects you, you cannot escape it. When you go visiting, your eyes rove about the garden; you interrupt the serious cocktail drinking because of an irresistible impulse to get up and pull a weed.
