(On being a professional actor) I started acting at 18 years old because I got a lead role in a movie. It wasn`t like I was a kid going, "When I grow up, I want to be an actor." Now, he is fighting on a different level, but it`s still a fight. What`s difficult about the prospect is trying to reinvent your self-confidence, even though it`s constantly being torn down. And, of course, for every 10 people who like you in a film, there`s 10 people who won`t. I read one critique of me in Velvet Goldmine that said I had all the charisma of chewed bubblegum. I think I kept that one in my scrapbook.

Constructive criticism is about finding something good and positive to soften the blow to the real critique of what really went on.

We do things with a wink and a nod. If you don`t include yourself in the critique, you have no business doing it.

I do think the patriotic thing to do is to critique my country. How else do you make a country better but by pointing out its flaws?

Finally, in my critique of the immigration image of America, it is also important to know that we`re not only a nation of immigrants, but we are in some part a nation of emigrants, which often gets neglected.
