My name is Kirk Douglas. You may know me. If you don`t ... Google me. I was a movie star and I`m Michael Douglas` dad, Catherine Zeta-Jones` father-in-law, and the grandparents of their two children. Today I celebrate my 90th birthday. I have a message to convey to America`s young people. A 90th birthday is special. In my case, this birthday is not only special but miraculous. I survived World War II, a helicopter crash, a stroke, and two new knees. It`s a tradition that when a `birthday boy` stands over his cake he makes a silent wish for his life and then blows out the candles. I have followed that tradition for 89 years but on my 90th birthday, I have decided to rebel. Instead of making a silent wish for myself, I want to make a loud wish for The World. Let`s face it: The World is in a mess and you are inheriting it. Generation Y, you are on the cusp. You are the group facing many problems: abject poverty, global warming, genocide, AIDS, and suicide bombers to name a few. These problems exist, and the world is silent. We have done very little to solve these problems. Now, we leave it to you. You have to fix it because the situation is intolerable. You need to rebel, to speak up, write, vote, and care about people and the world you live in. We live in the best country in the world. I know. My parents were Russian immigrants. America is a country where EVERYONE, regardless of race, creed, or age has a chance. I had that chance. You are the generation that is most impacted and the generation that can make a difference. I love this country because I came from a life of poverty. I was able to work my way through college and go into acting, the field that I love. There is no guarantee in this country that you will be successful. But you always have a chance. Nothing should interfere with it. You have to make sure that nothing stands in the way. When I blow out my candles - 90! ... it will take a long time ... but I`ll be thinking of you. (9 December 2006)

Suicide bombers caused us more than 50 percent of our casualties. The fence works. There is a decline in the number of those terrorist attacks against Israelis.

As a coach, I can really appreciate having a group of kids like this. There are a lot of kids out there who are obsessed by distance, and all they want to do is pound their drivers. Our kids aren`t like that. They understand the game. They get it. They realize that the goal is to get the ball in the hole, and the best way to do that is to practice your iron shots, your wedges, your chipping and your putting. If you develop those skills to a high degree, you`re going to beat the bombers most of the time.

Why does the Air Force need expensive new bombers? Have the people we`ve been bombing over the years been complaining?

They`d have to have a much wider support base than just those who are active suicide bombers.

They require the kind of courage that none of us would have. It`s a kind of courage that`s very hard to understand. And it`s our duty to try to understand it because it is the courage of desperation. And what is the difference between somebody who goes into a coffee house with the intention of killing as many people as possible - and does so - and somebody who`s in an aeroplane at the height of five miles, unobtainable by any anti-aircraft gun, and lets their bombs drop as scientifically as possible, in order to kill as few people as possible? I guarantee that the one who tries to kill as few people as possible will kill many more than the one who goes into a snack bar and blows himself or herself up. But in this campaign, I wonder how many of the people who have been killed were terrorists? I think very, very few. To my mind, it`s a big lie. - On Palestinian suicide bombers

I can`t have an unidentified car disappearing up the road any more, because it`ll be captured on CCTV. After all, it was CCTV that helped police capture the London bombers.

A large part of the problem, is that young people are being born into the world and growing up without much hope. And so, they become murderers, they become suicide bombers.

The Israelis have suffered a great deal, we must condemn suicide bombers, and we must never say that the plight of the Palestinians justifies this terrible thing.

When towns have sent out suicide bombers to fire incessantly and indiscriminately into Jewish communities, they become legitimate targets.

Sure, you would lose more bombers without fighters, but, flying in formation, you could get the job done.

They`re in convoys, taking the same risks as the male solders and Marines. The biggest risk here at the moment are those roadside bombs, the explosive devices. They`re getting increasingly sophisticated and increasingly powerful. And there seems to be almost a never-ending supply of suicide bombers, all of them said to be foreign fighters still coming through here.

The more bombers, the less room for doves of peace.
